Dia da Independência

Glen's sum up of Brazil's Independence Day & Michelle's photos of how we spent the holiday

Brazil's Independence Day traces its origins to the Napoleonic Wars and the invasion of Portugal by the French. Forced to flee to Brazil in 1807, the King of Portugal ruled from Rio de Janeiro from 1808-1820, creating the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves. As a result, Brazil became a kingdom and no longer strictly a colony. This important change would result in Brazil's independence under the rule of Prince Pedro.

Following political upheaval in Portugal in 1820, King João VI returned to Portugal from Brazil in 1821, leaving Prince Pedro as regent in Rio de Janeiro. Shortly thereafter, ministers in Lisbon demanded the return of Brazil to a colony under Portuguese rule. In response, Prince Pedro declared Brazil independent on September 7, 1822.

Since it was a rainy day we stayed indoors: we went to the mall to see a movie:

Cloudy skies, but no rain yet

Happy Independence Day, Brazil!

    1. How could I forget to mention the film we saw?! It was The Man from UNCLE, we liked it! São Paulo gets light and heavy rains, that day was a thunderstorm, like we get back home. The rainy season is over though, so it was pretty unusual
